What is a Master Key System?
Master Key Systems are a convenient and organized way to administer access to both an entire property as well as specified areas of that same property. There are numerous levels of master key systems that can be installed in properties of various types. Master key systems use traditional keys that can be copy-restricted or not..
Do I Need It?
If you have multiple doors and want multiple levels of access, Yes. The purpose of master key system is to allow access to certain doors and to deny access to certain doors. Having a master key system in place will eliminate the need to carry around numerous keys and makes it convenient for a building manager to gain access to offices, classrooms, etc. with a one key solution.
Fully Expandable.
Keep in mind that both new and existing master keys systems can be expanded upon and added to in the future IF that original master key system is set up for expansion when first installed.
Retrofit-able? Yep.
Master key systems can be installed on your building’s existing hardware in most cases, but keep in mind that for a master key system to be most effective, you should opt to use hardware from proven commercial brands such as SERGEANT, SCHLAGE, and MEDECO. This holds true especially on large master key system installations.
A MASTER KEY SYSTEM EXAMPLE
You have a building with 3 floors, on each floor you have 30 offices.
For each floor, you have a manager that is in charge of only that particular floor. With a master key system in place, that floor’s manager has access to all offices on his floor . His “master key” accesses doors on his entire floor, but not any other floor of the building.
His employees on that floor have access to only their particular office by way of a “change key” that operates only that ONE particular door lock. They do not have access to any other office on that floor or in the building.
The building managers, who have access to ALL floors and ALL offices; essentially the entire property, will use the “grand master” key which opens ALL LOCKS in that building.
This is an example of a 3-step master key system.
